We present one of the most ancient and most beautiful cities of Ukraine - Pereyaslav-Khmel'nickiy.

 Located on the shores of the Kaniv Reservoir, Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky is small city of 30,000 located an hour’s drive south from Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine. Pereyaslav has ancient and important historical roots, having celebrated its 1100^th birthday in 2007. 

 Mention of the city dates back to Byzantine times (900s), when the city played a key role in defending  the southern borders of Kievan Rus from raids of nomads. Pereyaslav was a principality from the mid-11^th century to 1239, when the city was destroyed by Tatars during the Mongol invasion. In the mid-1500s, the city became a center for Ukrainian Cossacks and it was here where a military alliance was forged with the Tsardom of Russia, when the famous Ukrainian Cossack and ruler of Kievan Rus, Bohdan Khmelnytsky, called forth the “Council of Pereyaslav”.

 Pereyaslav is often described as a living museum and the city boasts 29 of them, including an outdoor Folk Architecture Museum. Other favourite attractions include 17^th century St. Michael’s Church and Ascension Monastery.

  Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky’s architectural and folk museum was created in 1964 as part of a historical-ethnographic preservation, a territory of about 30 hectares. Of the 185 buildings, 104 are monuments to folk architecture of the 17^th-19^th centuries. There are more than 20,000 objects in the buildings, from tools and folk art to domestic items – all collected from eastern and central Ukraine.

 The city is a pleasant place to visit to enjoy the vast collection of museums, the Saturday market, or outdoor activities such as camping, swimming and boating.
